Venezuelan doctor in Weston: meet Dr. Nevett

My wife, Dr. Nevett, and I are both Venezuelan. She is a family doctor, and together we founded ON Care here in Weston, where she sees patients in English or Spanish and works directly with families looking for an ongoing relationship with their doctor.

Sharing a language and cultural background with your doctor can make difficult conversations easier to begin. Trust then develops over time, through questions you can ask without feeling you are interrupting, follow-up on something left unresolved, and the reassurance that your next appointment will take the previous one into account.

From Caracas to Weston

Alexandra grew up in Venezuela and studied medicine in Caracas. Her path was taking her toward surgery, but the situation in the country led us to move to Boston in 2014 so she could continue her studies. We were newly married, and our first child was born there.

In Boston, Alexandra found a mentor at Brigham and Women's Hospital who introduced her to family medicine. She discovered a specialty that would allow her to care for people of different ages and stay involved in their lives over the years. Getting to know a family could also help her understand each person in it.

She completed her residency in Tallahassee and then spent several years working as a hospitalist. That work gave her experience caring for people with acute illnesses, and it brought a question into focus: she wanted to keep caring for those people after they left the hospital.

We later settled in South Florida, where Alexandra worked in a primary care clinic and encountered the limits of the traditional insurance-based system, with its rushed and tightly constrained appointments. She decided to open her own office so she could practice medicine the way she wanted.

Together, we founded ON Care in Weston. The name comes from our last names, Oteyza and Nevett. We wanted to offer appointments with enough time and attention to get to know families and care for them over the years.

Having a family doctor again

Perhaps you remember a doctor who looked after several people in your family. When you arrived, that doctor already knew you and your health history. You could simply pick up the conversation.

That familiarity is something we are working to build at ON Care.

In practice, it means Dr. Nevett can see you for a recent problem and continue following up afterward. A checkup gives you time to review how you have been since your last visit. If you need to see a specialist, she can help coordinate that care and stay involved in the decisions affecting your health.

Members also have a direct number to contact her between appointments, without going through an intermediary or an automated phone system. Direct messages with your doctor let you ask questions and follow up on an ongoing concern, so you can get guidance when you are unsure what the next step should be. At ON Care, you can talk that through with your doctor.

The relationship takes shape through those exchanges. Over time, there is less to explain from the beginning.

How ON Care works

The practice uses a monthly membership that includes primary care services and direct communication with Dr. Nevett. ON Care does not bill insurance for those visits.
